ITR filing online, done by an expert, not a form-filling tool

Most "ITR filing online" options fall into two groups. Free utilities and apps let you fill the return yourself. It is fast, but every decision is yours: which form, which regime, whether the interest in your AIS is taxable, how to show an old mutual fund sale. Local agents do it for you, but you usually have to visit an office, wait, and rarely see how your tax was worked out.

How expert ITR filing online is different

We sit in between. You get a named tax expert who does the work, and you do it entirely from your phone. The difference shows in small things that change the final tax:

  • Your AIS is read line by line. Savings interest, dividend, a fixed deposit you forgot, rent reported by a tenant, a share sale: each entry is matched against your documents before anything is filed.
  • Both tax regimes are calculated for your numbers. Not a rule of thumb, but the actual tax under the old and the new regime, side by side, so you choose with figures in front of you.
  • You see the computation before filing. We send a one-page summary: income, deductions, tax, TDS already paid, refund or balance due. Nothing is filed until you say yes.
  • Help does not end at the acknowledgement. Refund delays, a defective return notice under section 139(9) or an intimation under section 143(1) are handled by the same team.

That is what we mean by ITR filing online with a real tax expert: the convenience of an app, with a person who is accountable for the numbers.

Who has to file an income tax return in India

Filing is compulsory when your total income before deductions crosses the basic exemption limit of the regime you are taxed under. For FY 2025-26 (assessment year 2026-27) that limit is ₹4 lakh in the new regime and ₹2.5 lakh in the old regime (₹3 lakh for senior citizens and ₹5 lakh for those 80 or older).

You also have to file, even if your income is below the limit, if during the year you:

  • deposited more than ₹1 crore in one or more current accounts, or more than ₹50 lakh in savings accounts;
  • spent more than ₹2 lakh on foreign travel, or more than ₹1 lakh on electricity in the year;
  • had TDS or TCS of ₹25,000 or more (₹50,000 for senior citizens);
  • had business turnover above ₹60 lakh or professional receipts above ₹10 lakh;
  • own any asset outside India or have signing authority in a foreign account.

Many people file even when it is not compulsory, and it is usually worth it: it is the only way to get back TDS deducted on interest or salary, it lets you carry forward capital losses, and banks, visa offices and lenders ask for ITR copies of the last two or three years as proof of income.

Which ITR form is right for you

Filing the wrong form is one of the most common reasons a return is marked defective. The form depends on the type of income, not on how much you earn.

FormWho it is forTypical income
ITR-1 (Sahaj)Resident individuals with total income up to ₹50 lakhSalary or pension, house property, interest; long-term gains on listed shares or equity funds up to ₹1.25 lakh
ITR-2Individuals and HUFs without business incomeCapital gains beyond the ITR-1 limit, more than one or two house properties, foreign income or assets, income above ₹50 lakh, NRIs
ITR-3Individuals and HUFs with business or professional incomeProprietors, professionals keeping books, F&O and intraday traders, partners in a firm
ITR-4 (Sugam)Residents using presumptive taxationSmall businesses under 44AD, professionals under 44ADA, goods carriers under 44AE, total income up to ₹50 lakh

If two forms seem to fit, the form for the more complex income wins. A salaried person who also traded futures and options files ITR-3, not ITR-1. Not sure? Our free Which ITR form tool asks five questions and tells you, or an expert decides it on the first call.

Documents you need for ITR filing online

You do not need a file full of papers. For most returns the list is short, and photos or PDFs sent on WhatsApp are enough.

If you have…Keep ready
Any returnPAN, Aadhaar linked to PAN, bank account (pre-validated on the portal for refunds), login or OTP access to the income tax portal
Salary or pensionForm 16 from each employer of the year, salary slips if you changed jobs
Interest, dividendBank interest certificates or statements; we also pull figures from your AIS
Shares, mutual funds, property saleCapital gains statement from your broker or fund registrar; sale and purchase deeds for property
Deductions (old regime)80C proofs, health insurance premium (80D), home-loan interest certificate, rent receipts for HRA, donation receipts
Business or professionBank statements, GST returns if registered, list of receipts and expenses

Missing something? Tell us what you have. In most cases we can work from your AIS and Form 26AS and ask only for what is genuinely needed. The full list by situation is in our document checklist.

Old vs new tax regime for FY 2025-26

The new regime is the default. You can choose the old regime while filing, and salaried people without business income can switch every year. The new regime has lower rates but almost no deductions; the old regime keeps deductions like 80C, 80D, HRA and home-loan interest.

Income slab (new regime)Tax rate
Up to ₹4 lakhNil
₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh5%
₹8 lakh to ₹12 lakh10%
₹12 lakh to ₹16 lakh15%
₹16 lakh to ₹20 lakh20%
₹20 lakh to ₹24 lakh25%
Above ₹24 lakh30%

Under the new regime the rebate under section 87A makes tax nil when taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh, and salaried people also get a standard deduction of ₹75,000, so salary up to ₹12.75 lakh usually pays no tax. The rebate does not cover special-rate income such as capital gains on shares.

When does the old regime still win? Usually when your deductions together are large, for example a home loan with high interest, full 80C, health insurance for parents and HRA in a metro city. The only reliable answer is to calculate both, which we do for every return. You can try it yourself with our income tax calculator.

ITR filing for salaried employees: reading your Form 16 the right way

Form 16 is the starting point, not the finished return. Part A shows the tax your employer deducted and deposited against your PAN; Part B shows how the employer worked out your taxable salary. The figure the employer used is based on what you declared during the year, so it can be wrong in both directions.

Before we file a salaried return, we check four things. First, that the TDS in Part A matches Form 26AS. If the employer deposited less, the credit will not reach you. Second, that the regime used by the employer is actually the better one for you; you can still switch at the time of filing if you are salaried. Third, that income outside salary (savings interest, FD interest, dividends, rent, a mutual fund sale) is added, because Form 16 never shows it. Fourth, that deductions you paid for but forgot to declare, such as health insurance for parents or an NPS contribution, are claimed in the return where the old regime allows them.

If you changed jobs during the year, both Form 16s are combined, the standard deduction is claimed once and any shortfall in TDS is paid before filing. Our ITR filing for salaried employees service covers all of this, and the HRA calculator shows what your rent can save under the old regime.

Shares, mutual funds and capital gains in your return

If you sold shares, equity mutual funds or ETFs during the year, ITR-1 is no longer allowed and the gains go into the capital gains schedule of ITR-2 (or ITR-3 if you also have business income or trade in F&O). For sales made after 23 July 2024, the rates on listed equity are:

  • Short-term gains (held 12 months or less): 20% under section 111A.
  • Long-term gains (held more than 12 months): 12.5% under section 112A on the amount above ₹1.25 lakh in the year.
  • Debt mutual funds bought on or after 1 April 2023: gains are added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, whatever the holding period.

Two points catch people out. The ₹12 lakh zero-tax limit of the new regime does not cover gains taxed at these special rates, so a return can show tax even when total income looks small. And losses matter: a short-term loss this year can be set off against gains and carried forward for eight years, but only if the return is filed by the due date.

We work from your broker's capital gains statement and the consolidated mutual fund statement, match every sale with AIS and apply grandfathering for shares bought before 1 February 2018. For a quick estimate, try our capital gains calculator. Intraday and F&O trades are treated as business income; our F&O and trader ITR filing service handles those, including the tax audit check.

AIS, TIS and Form 26AS: check them before you file

The income tax department already knows a lot about your year. The Annual Information Statement (AIS) lists salary, interest, dividends, share and mutual fund sales, rent received, foreign remittances and high-value purchases reported by banks, employers and registrars. The Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) adds those up by category, and Form 26AS shows the TDS and TCS credited to your PAN along with any advance or self-assessment tax you paid.

Most notices under section 143(1) come from one simple gap: the return says one thing and AIS says another. That is why we download your AIS before preparing anything, not after. Where AIS is wrong (a duplicate entry, a sale reported twice, interest belonging to a joint holder), we submit feedback on the portal and keep the correct figure in your return with a note, instead of copying the error.

You can see your own AIS by logging in to the income tax e-filing portal and opening the AIS tab. Our AIS and 26AS guide explains each part. If you are not comfortable doing that, share the PDF with your expert and we will walk you through every line on the call.

ITR filing for NRIs, freelancers and small businesses

NRIs. Your residential status is decided for each financial year, mainly by the number of days you were in India (182 days is the basic test, with extra conditions for people who visit often). An NRI cannot use ITR-1, so rent, interest, capital gains or a property sale in India go into ITR-2. We claim TDS credits, apply the tax treaty (DTAA) rate where it is lower, and help with refunds of the higher TDS that buyers and banks often deduct. See our NRI ITR filing service.

Freelancers and consultants. Professionals can use presumptive taxation under section 44ADA and declare 50% of receipts as income, without books of account, as long as gross receipts stay within ₹75 lakh and cash receipts are no more than 5%. It is often the simplest and cheapest option, but not always: if your real expenses are higher, normal books may save more tax. We compare both on our ITR filing for freelancers service.

Shop owners and small businesses. Section 44AD lets you declare 6% of digital receipts (8% of cash receipts) as income, with a turnover limit of ₹3 crore when cash receipts are within 5%, and ₹2 crore otherwise. The return is ITR-4 for eligible residents or ITR-3 for everyone else. Remember that GST turnover and the turnover in your ITR should match, because the department compares them. The 44AD presumptive tax calculator shows your figure.

Deductions that still save tax this year

Under the old regime, the deductions that make the biggest difference are section 80C (up to ₹1.5 lakh for EPF, PPF, ELSS, life insurance, principal on a home loan and children's tuition fees), section 80D for health insurance (up to ₹25,000 for your family and a further ₹25,000 for parents, or ₹50,000 if they are senior citizens), an extra ₹50,000 for your own NPS contribution under section 80CCD(1B), interest on a home loan for a self-occupied house up to ₹2 lakh, and HRA if you pay rent.

Under the new regime, most of these are not available, but a few still are: the ₹75,000 standard deduction for salaried people and pensioners, your employer's contribution to NPS under section 80CCD(2) up to 14% of salary, and the family pension deduction.

Because the new regime has lower slabs and makes tax nil up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income, the old regime now wins mainly for people with large deductions, typically a home loan together with full 80C, 80D and HRA. Our income tax calculator compares both regimes in a minute, the 80C and 80D guide lists what qualifies, and your expert confirms it with your actual figures before the return is filed.

ITR filing charges: what you pay and what is included

Our fee depends on the work your return needs, not on how much refund you get. A salaried return with one Form 16 takes far less time than a return with share trading, foreign income or a business. Each service page shows its plans with the original price and the current offer price, so you know the range before you call.

  • Basic: straightforward returns: one main income, few deductions.
  • Premium: what most people choose: every deduction checked, refund followed up until it is credited.
  • Elite: capital gains, multiple income sources, foreign income or complex cases, handled by a senior expert.

The expert confirms the exact fee on the first call, before any work starts. There are no hidden charges, and if your case turns out simpler than expected you pay the lower plan. Compare this with what a chartered accountant charges for ITR filing in your city, and with the cost of a single mistake that leads to a notice.

ITR filing last date, late fee and what to do if you missed it

For individuals the usual due date is 31 July for ITR-1 and ITR-2. For FY 2025-26, ITR-3 and ITR-4 cases that do not need an audit have until 31 August 2026, and audit cases until 31 October 2026. Exact dates for the current year, with days left, are always on our tax calendar.

Missing the due date is fixable, but it costs something:

  • Late fee under section 234F: ₹5,000, or ₹1,000 if your total income is up to ₹5 lakh.
  • Interest under section 234A: 1% a month on any tax still unpaid.
  • Losses from business or capital gains cannot be carried forward from a late return.
  • The new regime becomes compulsory for a belated return if you have business income.

A belated return can be filed until 31 December 2026 for this year. If you already filed and found a mistake, a revised return fixes it. And if both deadlines are gone, an updated return (ITR-U) can still be filed within 48 months from the end of the assessment year, with additional tax of 25% to 70% of the tax and interest due, depending on how late it is. Our 234F late fee calculator shows the cost in seconds.

After you file: e-verification, processing and refund

A return is complete only after it is verified. You have 30 days from filing to e-verify it with an Aadhaar OTP, net banking or a bank account EVC; after that the filing date becomes the date of verification. We help you do it on the same call, so this step is never forgotten.

The department then processes the return and sends an intimation under section 143(1) by email. It confirms your figures, or shows a demand or a refund. Simple returns with matching data are often processed within a few weeks; returns with mismatches take longer.

If your refund is late, the usual reasons are a bank account that is not pre-validated, a PAN that is not linked with Aadhaar, an outstanding demand from an earlier year being adjusted, or a mismatch between your return and AIS. Our refund delay checker narrows it down, and our team follows up on the portal for Premium and Elite clients until the money is in your account.

Got an income tax notice? Do not panic, do not ignore it

Most notices are not accusations. They are automated messages asking you to explain or correct something. The common ones we handle every week:

  • Section 143(1) intimation: your return was processed with an adjustment or a demand.
  • Section 139(9) defective return: a form or schedule problem that must be fixed within 15 days.
  • Demand notice under section 156: tax shown as payable; it may be correct, or it may be a mismatch you can contest.
  • Section 143(2) scrutiny: the officer wants supporting documents for parts of your return.

Every notice has a response window, and replying late is what turns a small issue into a big one. Share the notice with us and an expert tells you in plain words what it means and what it will take. Details are on our income tax notice reply page, and the notice decoder explains the section number instantly.

Mistakes we fix most often during the filing season

These are the errors our team sees again and again in returns people filed on their own or got filed in a hurry. Each one can lead to a notice, a lower refund or extra tax:

  • Savings and FD interest left out because no TDS was cut. It still appears in AIS and triggers a mismatch.
  • Two employers, two standard deductions: after a job change both Form 16s show the deduction, but it can be claimed only once.
  • Mutual fund redemptions ignored because "it was only a switch", but every switch is a sale for tax purposes.
  • The wrong form: ITR-1 filed despite share trading, or ITR-4 filed despite F&O losses.
  • HRA claimed in the new regime, where it is not allowed, or rent paid to a parent without the parent showing that rent as income.
  • Return filed but never e-verified: legally it is treated as not filed at all.

If you see your own return in this list, it is usually not too late. A revised or updated return can correct most of these, and the earlier it is done, the cheaper it is.

Why people across India choose ITR Filing Online

Searching for "ITR filing near me" usually means one thing: you want someone you can actually talk to. That is how we work, only without the commute. Our office is in Noida, but the service is fully online, so a salaried employee in Pune, a pensioner in Lucknow and an NRI in Dubai get the same expert and the same process.

  • A registered firm, not an app. TaxCaller India LLP (LLPIN AAQ-7388), working on tax and compliance since 2018.
  • Real people on call and WhatsApp, Monday to Saturday, 9 AM to 7:30 PM, on +91 99111 46650.
  • A named expert reviews every page of this site and every return we file. You can see who on our experts page.
  • Privacy first. Your documents are used only to prepare your return. We never ask for your bank password, card details or portal password over chat.
  • Clear fees: shown on every service page and confirmed before any work begins.

Whether it is your first return or your fifteenth, a refund that is stuck or a notice you do not understand, you can start with a free call. If filing on your own is the better choice for you, we will tell you that too.

FAQs

Questions people ask before filing their ITR online

How does ITR filing online with you work?

You book a callback or message us on WhatsApp. A tax expert asks a few questions, you share your documents from your phone, and we prepare the return. We send you the computation, file only after your approval and help you e-verify on the same call. The acknowledgement and computation reach you on WhatsApp and email.

How long does online ITR filing take?

Most salaried returns are filed within 24 Minutes of receiving complete documents. Returns with capital gains, several income sources, foreign income or business income usually take two to three working days, because each statement has to be checked line by line against your AIS and Form 26AS before the return is filed.

What are your ITR filing charges?

The fee depends on the work your return needs: Basic for simple returns, Premium for full deduction checks and refund follow-up, and Elite for capital gains or complex cases. Every service page shows the plans with prices. Your expert confirms the exact fee on the first call, before any work starts, with no hidden charges.

Do I need to visit your office?

No. The whole service is online. You share documents on WhatsApp or email, talk to your expert on the phone and approve the computation from your mobile. Our office is in Noida, but we file returns for people in every state of India and for NRIs living abroad, without any visit.

Which documents do I need to file my ITR?

Usually PAN, Aadhaar, Form 16 if you are salaried, bank interest details and access to your AIS. For share or mutual fund sales we need the capital gains statement, and for old-regime deductions the investment and insurance proofs. If something is missing, we often work from your AIS and ask only for what is really needed.

Is it safe to share my documents on WhatsApp?

Your documents are used only to prepare your return and are never shared with anyone else. We never ask for your bank password, card details or OTPs over chat. If you prefer, you can email the documents instead, and you can ask us to delete them once your return is filed and processed.

Can you file my ITR after the due date?

Yes. A belated return can be filed after the due date until the time limit for the year, with a late fee under section 234F and interest on any unpaid tax. If that window has also closed, an updated return (ITR-U) may still be possible. An expert checks which option applies to you and what it will cost.

Which tax regime should I choose this year?

It depends on your deductions. The new regime has lower rates and makes tax nil up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income, but allows very few deductions. The old regime can still be cheaper with a large home loan, full 80C, health insurance and HRA. We calculate both for your exact numbers before filing.

Will you help if I get an income tax notice later?

Yes. Premium and Elite plans include help with a notice on the return we filed, such as a 143(1) adjustment or a 139(9) defective return. For other notices, including demand or scrutiny notices, an expert reads the notice, explains it in plain words and tells you the cost of replying before starting.

How do I know my return has been processed?

After e-verification the department processes your return and emails an intimation under section 143(1), which shows whether there is a refund, a demand or no change. We tell you when it arrives, explain it, and for refund cases we keep checking the portal until the refund is credited to your bank account.

Your return, filed right — without the stress.
